Where Are Some Great Places to Go Birding in the Harbor Springs – Petoskey Area

Birding is an activity that the entire family can partake in. It is fun, free and available everywhere and year-round! Don’t forget your binoculars.

The Trout Creek hiking trails are perfect for birding because there are tall trees, wetlands and streams that attract all sorts of birds. In the winter, Pileated Woodpeckers, Black-Capped Chickadees & Dark-Eyed Juncos are some of the birds that are here. During the spring & summer Hummingbirds, Scarlet Tanagers, Indigo Buntings & many others are here. Spring migration is also a good reason to head up to northern Michigan to watch the Eagles, Hawks and other Raptors fly over the Straits of Mackinac from Michigan’s Lower Peninsula to the Upper Peninsula. All so fascinating!

We also have some good suggestions for Birding Apps to help you identify what you find. The apps below are available on iPhone. But any smart phone should have apps that are similar.

Song Sleuth – This app allows you to record the bird song to help identify it.
Audubon – Either use Search the Guide or Identify a Bird. This allows you to choose birds features i.e. color, size, habitat. All to help you identify the bird that you see.
eBird – This app is so fun! As you are out birding, this app will keep track of how many birds and what types you have found for the day.
Picture Bird – This app has you take a photo with your phone and it will then help identify what you are seeing.
